National Workshop on International Indexes in Achieving SDGs

a2i and Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) organized the ‘National Workshop on International Indexes in Achieving SDGs’ on 16 October 2019 at the BBS Auditorium, Parishankhyan Bhaban (Statistics Building), Dhaka. A. Mannan, MP, Honorable Minister, Ministry of Planning is graced the occasion as the chief guest. Nojibur Rahman, Principal Secretary to Honorable Prime Minister, Prime Minister’s Office; Md. NM Zeaul Alam, Senior Secretary, ICT Division; Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Principal Coordinator (SDGs), Prime Minister’s Office and Dr. Shamsul Alam, Member (Senior Secretary), General Economics Division, Planning Commission were present as the special guests. Saurendra Nath Chakrabhartty, Secretary, Statistics and Informatics Division will present the concluding remarks. Dr. Abdul Mannan, PAA, Joint Secretary, Project Director, a2i Programme delivered the vote of thanks. Mr. Sudipto Mukerjee, Resident Representative, UNDP Bangladesh was present as the guest of honor. The primary objective of the workshop was to explore and identify the agencies for the respective Global Indices. Besides, the workshop helped analyze the pathway of institutionalization of Global Indices in Bangladesh, create awareness on Global Indices among the responsible authorities, make the agencies understand the importance of global indices for Bangladesh and establish a roadmap for Bangladesh to ensure a better position in various global indices. Mr. Mohammad Tajul Islam, Additional Secretary, Director General, Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics delivered the welcome speech. Separate presentations was given by Dr. Dipankar Roy, Deputy Secretary, Statistics and Informatics Division on the importance of International Indexes and by Dr. Ramiz Uddin, Head of Results Management and Data, a2i on the gaps and opportunities in the Global Indices for Bangladesh. The Chief Guest, Special Guests as well as the Guest of Honor delivered their valuable speeches during the event. Bangladesh’s commendable achievement in implementing MDGs has poised Bangladesh to do better in achieving the SDGs. This country is playing an active role in the United Nation’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda. Enable tracking Bangladesh’s progress towards attainment of SDGs and other national development goals through a web-based information repository, a2i with technical support from UNDP and USAID- in collaboration with GED of Planning Commission, Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and other government and private stakeholders, designed and developed SDG tracker. It is aiming to become a middle-income country by 2021.
